The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while traveling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After convincing some friends to buy a cask of Glenfarclas he expanded his syndicate and in 2004 the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC.
They have a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes from. They also offer the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler.
'These 26 labels are from 26 unique Societybottlings and the result of 26 Malts, a creative partnership between the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and 26, a national organisation thatchampions the imaginative use of language in business.
'The project paired 26 writers with 26 designers to create the unique identities and labels for 26 Society malts. 26 Malts illustrates the power of words and images working creatively together, and maintains the long association of whisky with literature and language.'
