Winning bid: £105

Bruichladdich was established in 1881 and has changed hands many times over the years. Owned by French spirit group Remy Martin Bruichladdich distill, mature and bottle their whisky on site as well as using barley from the surrounding farms. Since their renaissance in 2001 their range of whiskies are bottled without added colour or chill filtration and at 46% ABV and above. They are pioneers of cask management, peating levels and presentation.

The 18 year old 2nd edition continues the sweet wine cask influence of the 1st edition’s pioneering bourbon / Willi Opitz bottling. Here Bruichladdich have again fused American oak with the more flavoursome French oak - but this time the casks contained the rare, sweet wine from Jurancon in the Pyrennean foothills of south-west France. Together they make another extraordinarily mellow and profound bottling.
