Winning bid: £330
The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow 'cut' of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world.
Macallan released a new four-part range - The Macallan 1824 Series, which is discerned by the colour of the liquid rather than age.
Ruby
The tip top bottle in the new 1824 Series from Macallan. Despite having no age statement, this whisky has been aged in first fill Spanish Oak and American Oak which has been seasoned with Sherry. It's this Sherry influence which gives the whisky it's lovely colour. Ruby, of course!
43% ABV / 70cl
Sienna
The Macallan 1824 Series is separate to The Macallan 1824 Collection that is currently exclusively available in global travel retail. The Series may come to be known as ‘The Colour Range’ in time.
43% ABV / 70cl
Gold
The entry level bottling from Macallan's new range has done away with age-statements and instead focuses on the colour of the whisky.
40% ABV / 70cl
Amber
With the absence of age statements, The Macallan has designed the packaging of the Series to reflect the colour, flavour and price point of each whisky.
