Lot number: 074-1604

Winning bid: £120

Given the success and cult-like fan base that Ardbeg has recently enjoyed, it is almost impossible to imagine that the distillery was closed, on and off, for 15 years until it was purchased by Glenmorangie. Sitting on the southern coastline, the current distillery was founded in 1815, the original having been destroyed by excise men. The Ardbeg spirit still is fitted with a purifier which many believe accounts for its fruity, zesty character.

Alligator

The general release of 2011's much anticipated Ardbeg - the Alligator. It's named for the high level of char on the inside of some of the casks used for maturation, which makes the wood look like alligator skin.

Blasda

We all know Ardbeg packs a peaty punch, but if you remove some of that peat, can Ardbeg still retain its perfect balance? The mind boggling answer is "yes"!

By taming its usual mighty peating levels Ardbeg created Blasda, peated to an average of just 8 parts per million phenol (8ppm) compared to the more usual 55ppm.

Blasda is still perfectly balanced, but light, sweet and delicious, which is lucky, as Blasda is Gaelic for "sweet and delicious."
