Lot number: 076-1195

Winning bid: £30

This American single malt "whiskey" from the state of Oregon is made using peat malted Scottish barley. The spirit is then aged for three years in Sherry casks, resulting in a full flavoured whisky. Oregon boasts a similar climate to that of Scotland (although it's hard to believe it's quite as bad), so this aught to be as close to Scotch as you're likely to get from the U.S of A.

Since Clear Creek began making McCarthy's in the 1990s, it has gradually gained significant acclaim. In 2004, Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible gave it the award of "Best Small Batch Whiskey" with a score of 94. That same year, Michael Jackson put it on his list "The Ten Best American Whiskeys".
