Lot number: 078-1226

Winning bid: £640

Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island of Arran was once a hotbed of illicit distillation and smuggling. Eventually though the dreaded Excise men got the best of Arran's renegade stillmen, and the island was without a working distillery from 1837. That all changed in 1995 when the Arran distillery at Lochranza started production.

Although it is a relative youngster, Arran's investment in quality casks has paid dividends, and its popularity continues to soar like the Golden Eagles that nest nearby. This quick success, combined with high visitor numbers at the Lochranza distillery, have enabled the company to construct another distillery at Lagg, on the south of the island, that will focus on creating peated whisky.

The Devil’s Punch Bowl is the company's first whisky to combine peated and un-peated casks.

Chapter 1:

Limited to 6,660 (The Mark of the Beast, ooh err) bottles globally, the whisky is named after the glacial hollow Coire na Ciche on Arran.

It has been drawn from 24 different Arran casks, including Sherry butts.

52.3% ABV / 70cl

Chapter 2:

The 2nd edition of the acclaimed Devil's Punch Bowl from Arran, subtitled Angels & Devils. Each of the 27 casks used was chosen by master distiller James MacTaggart - the composition is 17 sherry casks, 6 unpeated bourbon casks and 4 peated bourbon casks ranging from 1997 to 2004.

Cask Type: Sherry, bourbon (peated and unpeated) casks

53.1% ABV / 70cl

Chapter 3:

James MacTaggart, Master Distiller at Arran has crafted this final part of the Devil's Punch Bowl Trilogy to, "bring the curtain down in dramatic style." A careful blending of 21 casks, 8 Oloroso, 8 French Oak Barriques and 5 Bourbon Barrels this is James' favourite of the Trilogy.

Interestingly Chapter III features no peated whisky but does introduce French Oak into the mix.

Cask Type: Oloroso Sherry Butts, French Oak Barriques and Bourbon Barrels

53.4% ABV / 70cl
