Starting with the Yoichi distillery and then adding Miyagikyo in 1969, Nikka also own Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland. Owned by Asahi Breweries since 2001, the name Nikka is a contraction of Nippon Kaju which was adopted in 1952.
Situated on the Northern island of Hokkaido, the Yoichi distillery was bulit by Masataka Takersuru in what he thought was the ideal site for a whisky distillery. The stills are direct fired, something that has been abandoned by all but a handful of Scottish distilleries, and they describe their whisky as a, "rich, peaty and masculine malt."
