Given the success and cult-like fan base that Ardbeg has recently enjoyed, it is almost impossible to imagine that the distillery was closed, on and off, for 15 years until it was purchased by Glenmorangie. Sitting on the southern coastline, the current distillery was founded in 1815, the original having been destroyed by excise men. The Ardbeg spirit still is fitted with a purifier which many believe accounts for its fruity, zesty character.

Following on from 2016's 21 Year Old Committee release, this 23 Year Old expression (also only available to Committee members) was distilled during a tumultuous time for the distillery, prior to its Glenmorangie takeover and renaissance. Matured in a combination of Bourbon and Oloroso casks, and described by Distillery Manager, Mickey Heads, as a glimpse back into Ardbeg’s turbulent past that reaffirms just why the distillery couldn’t be allowed to disappear.
