Lot number: 083-0244

Winning bid: £125

Founded in 1824 by John Haig, Cameronbridge can lay claim to being both the largest and oldest grain distillery in Europe. In truth it was born from two distilling dynasties, the Haigs and the Steins, who were joined by marriage several generations previously. The real turning point for the distillery came in 1829, when John installed the Patent Still, invented by his cousin Robert Stein. This revolutionary design, which was later to be improved upon by Aeneas Coffey, meant that production could be scaled up dramatically.

By 1865, Haig entered into an alliance with eight other distillers to form DCL, the Distillers Company Ltd, that would eventually evolve into Diageo, who still wholly control the distillery today. As well as supplying grain spirit for the company's various blends, the Cameronbridge distillery produces both Tanqueray and Gordon's Gin, as well as Smirnoff vodka. Not to mention the David Beckham endorsed Haig Club.
