Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island of Arran was once a hotbed of illicit distillation and smuggling. Eventually though the dreaded Excise men got the best of Arran's renegade stillmen, and the island was without a working distillery from 1837. That all changed in 1995 when the Arran distillery at Lochranza started production.
Although it is a relative youngster, Arran's investment in quality casks has paid dividends, and its popularity continues to soar like the Golden Eagles that nest nearby. This quick success, combined with high visitor numbers at the Lochranza distillery, have enabled the company to construct another distillery at Lagg, on the south of the island, that will focus on creating peated whisky.
This celebratory 20th anniversary bottling comes with a decanter and box both designed and hand blown by Glencairn Crystal. This makes each bottle rather unique, and the fill level appears to be irregular from bottle to bottle but it is simply the nuance of the glass contours due to this particular crafting process. David Croll, the CEO of Whisk-e (Arran's distributor in Japan) spoke fondly of this release and how he feels that it was finally the right time to tap Arran's 7th ever single cask. The choice to do so honours the then manager of Arran distillery, Gordon Mitchell, revering his legacy as meticulous and notorious master of the trade and all that he achieved during his time with the business.
