Lot number: 085-7700

Winning bid: £210

Built to straddle the banks of the Forth-Clyde canal in 1840, Rosebank distillery’s Lowland location between Glasgow and Edinburgh produced a still highly revered single malt, comprising of a smooth, meadow flower bouquet with fresh citrus notes. In 1914, as a limited company, Rosebank became one of the founding members of the Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. It manufactured consistently all the way into the early 90’s, pausing only under the duress of World War.

Unfortunately, the distillery floundered when vehicles became popular for making more efficient deliveries, access to the canal side was tricky, and previously the processes had been carried over the rickety bridge between one part of the distillery and the other, which just wasn’t sustainable. After assessment inspection in 1993, the mandatory proposal of a £2b upgrade actually sunk the distillery in the end, but not without uproar from whisky aficionados across the land, who deemed their produce as ‘the most distinguished Lowland malt’.
