Lot number: 089-2520

Winning bid: £460

For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of the World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.

The family owned Springbank is unique in that it remains the only distillery in Scotland where 100% of the production process is carried out on site, and while it produces three distinct styles (in Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn), its eponymous Springbank expression still accounts for the lion's share of production. A medium peated, two and a half times distilled spirit, Springbank is complex, robust and never boring!

The company produced these very limited bottlings after they had been labelled (by a fellow distiller) as being odd for suspending production for a while in 2008. "An odd decision from a very odd bunch of people", ran the quote. The distillery then ran a competition asking Springbank fans what they thought ODD might stand for. The winner came up with Original, Distinct, Defiant, the words which appear on every label.
