Lot number: 091-1166

Winning bid: £220

Mothballed by previous owners Whyte & Mackay, Bruichladdich distillery was revived in the year 2000 by indy bottler Murray McDavid. For a long time the distillery was the black sheep of Islay, on account of producing unpeated whisky in order to meet its owner's blending requirements. Contrary to general expectations though, this also made it a hit with the locals who were presumably sick of the sight of peat.

Since its resurrection, and under the guiding hand of maestro Jim McEwan, Bruichladdich hasn't shied away from experimentation in cask management, quadruple distillation, love-it-or-hate-it presentation, and the introduction of the heavily peated Port Charlotte and (REALLY heavily peated) Octomore ranges. Oh, and they make a mean gin too.

The fourth release of the legendary Bruichladdich Black Art whisky. Former Master Distiller Jim McEwan has kept the composition of this whisky a secret. We've heard that it's a mixture of American and French oak.

Bruichladdich instead prefer to leave us hanging with a quote from Shakespeare, from that famous Scottish play:

“Stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires."
