Lot number: 092-6914

Winning bid: £130

Given the success and cult-like fan base that Ardbeg has recently enjoyed, it is almost impossible to imagine that the distillery was closed, on and off, for 15 years until it was purchased by Glenmorangie. Sitting on the southern coastline, the current distillery was founded in 1815, the original having been destroyed by excise men. The Ardbeg spirit still is fitted with a purifier which many believe accounts for its fruity, zesty character.

This is the first release from Ardbeg as part of its 200th anniversary celebrations, for which the distillery aimed to bottle its "past, present and future."

For this committee release, Dr Bill Lumsden took inspiration from the differing styles of whisky his predecessors created over the last 200 years. The booklet briefly recounts the history of Ardbeg, from its founding by John McDougall to its mothballed and derelict period; and contains a pledge that "Ardbeg will never be automated or simulated."
