Lot number: 110-04166

Winning bid: £35

The original religious buildings at Lindores Abbey near Newburgh, Fife were founded by the Earl of Huntingdon in the late 12th century and they were once frequented by kings and queens. Current owners, the Mackenzie Smiths had historical reasoning behind their decision to build a distillery at the site in 2016 as it is claimed that the first written reference to Scottish whisky production relates to Lindores Abbey where the monks produced aqua vitae: early releases from the distillery are bottled under this name. The plan is to create a world class visitor attraction to teach the history of the Abbey and the spirit.
