The Black Isle in the northern Highlands is rich with whisky history, where illicit moonshiners shared the land with several licensed distillers. The Glen Ord distillery, built in 1838 and owned by a local Laird called Thomas MacKenzie, was one of the latter.

The region has always been fertile with barley, making it an ideal location, and allowing the distillery to be self-sufficient, with its own on-site maltings. This was to be a big advantage for Glen Ord, beginning with basic floor malting, then upgrading to Saladin boxes in 1961 and finally automatic drum maltings a few years later. This development resulted in an increase in production, and led to Glen Ord being able to supply its fellow Diageo distilleries with malt.

These days, Glen Ord single malt is most often seen bottled under the Singleton umbrella (that also includes Dufftown and Glendullan), and marketed strongly in Asia.
