Based on Grande-Terre, the eastern half of Guadeloupe, Damoiseau is the largest distillery on the whole island covering about half the entire production on Guadeloupe with an annual output of roughly 3 million litres. It is a relative youngster - being established in the 1940s - and the rum produced is very light. They are also known for producing spirit from molasses when it is not the right time of year for sugarcane growth.
The distillery is now run by Hervé Damoiseau - a cousin of Hubert Damoiseau who heads the Bellevue distillery on Marie Galante just off the coast of Guadeloupe - and it is important to note that rums labeled as "Guadeloupe Bellevue 1998" or "Grande-Terre 1998" are not from the Bellevue distillery, but are instead from Damoiseau. In 1998, Hervé supposedly sold molasses rum to The Main Rum Company which he thought would go to the baking industry, but was later bottled by independent bottlers.
This rum has been bottled for Milano Rum Festival.
