D Johnston & Co (Laphroaig) Ltd was originally founded circa 1820 by Donald and Alex Johnston when Laphroaig distillery on Islay, Scotland was established. It was ran by members of the Johnston family after the deaths of Donald and Alex, under the name of Dugald Johnston & Co, acting as distillers and ale and beer merchants. It was then inherited by Miss Bessie Williamson in 1954, before being acquired by Long John Distilleries Ltd from 1962-1967. Long John was part of the Seager Group, under Seager Evans and Co Ltd who were taken over by Schenley Industries Inc in 1956 and its Scottish distilleries were transferred to Strathclyde and Long John Distilleries, which then became Long John Distillers Ltd. Seager Evans, reconstituted as Long John International in 1970, was purchased by Whitbread and Co Ltd in 1975. The Whitbread spirits division was then purchased by Allied Distillers Ltd in 1989. D Johnston & Co (Laphroaig) Ltd is still in existence today.
