Lot number: 131-02172

Winning bid: £480

The four distilleries represent the ‘four corners of Scotland’ and the regional variations of Lowland (Glenkinchie), Speyside (Cardhu), Islay (Caol Ila) and Highland (Clynelish) crucial to the art of whisky blending at the heart of Johnnie Walker.

Cardhu

The first distillery purchased by John Walker & Sons in 1893, Cardhu had been operating from 1824 - though illicit whisky production had happened onsite since a decade earlier - before it became the home of Johnnie Walker at the end of the century. In 2003 there were protests at the changing of Cardhu from a single malt to a 'pure malt' with contributions from other distilleries and even the name of the distillery was reverted to 'Cardow'. Returned to a single malt and its true form in 2005, its key markets are France and Spain.

Clynelish

The original Clynelish distillery was built in 1819 by the reviled Duke of Sutherland as part of the infamous Highland Clearances project. It is somewhat satisfying then that it failed to make much of an impression during these early years, going through a long period of turmoil before finding its way into the hands of John Walker and DCL in 1930. This proved a real turning point though, and in 1967 it was decided that a larger, more modern distillery was needed to keep up with demand. This newer distillery is the one we associate today with the name Clynelish; the original being renamed Brora (after the neighbouring town) in 1969 to avoid confusion.

Perhaps surprisingly, due to the high regard with which its signature “waxy” style is held amongst whisky fans, Clynelish doesn't have much in the way of a core range beyond its 14-year-old; with most of its presence as a single malt down to current owner Diageo's annual releases, or releases by independent bottlers. Instead it is most often found in blends and it provides the heart of Johnnie Walker's Gold Label Reserve.

Glenkinchie

Glenkinchie was originally founded in 1825 and launched under the name Milton. The distillery was cherry picked by Diageo to represent the finest of the lowland whisky region in their Classic Malts range of 1988. Situated in Pencaitland, East Lothian, ‘kinchie’ is a derivative of the name ‘De Quincy’, the family name of the original farmland owners upon which the distillery was built. The distillery also boasts Scotland’s largest wash still at over 30,000 litres, and won the Best Lowland Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards of 2013.
