Lot number: 102-01807

Winning bid: £2,700

The Tobermory Distillery, on the island of Mull, sits on the waterfront in the picturesque, and colourful, town of the same name (although those of you with young children may know it better as "Balamory"). Like so many others, the distillery, since its founding in 1798, has gone through several periods of closure, with this down-time accounting for nearly as much of its life as its periods of production have.

The distillery's Ledaig expression (pronounced led-chig, and meaning "safe haven" in Gaelic) was first produced in 1971 when the Tobermory distillery was reopened after more than 40 years of silence. For a while all spirit produced was peated and called Ledaig. This changed soon enough and it became the name given to the peated malt produced at this distillery. It is only now becoming widely available as a single malt due to renewed investment, and promotion by its current owners, Burn Stewart Distillers.

This is some of the last peated spirit to come out of the distillery from before 1996. 'Dusgadh' is Gaelic for 'awakening'. Each bottle comes with a memento card made from the copper from the now retired stills this spirit came from.
