Winning bid: £2,600

Talisker was founded by two brothers, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill in 1830 and until 1928 practised triple distillation. The distillery was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in November 1960, including commissioning identical stills to those that had been destroyed in the fire. In 1998 it was part of Diageo's Classic Malts original line up and in 2014 it became the 10th best selling single malt in the world and demand keeps growing. Recent releases include Talisker Skye and Talisker Neist Point.

This rather remarkable old Talisker, bottled by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries in the late 1950s, sports the now archaic title of liqueur whisky. A term that is, these days, reserved for cloyingly sweet, sugar saturated digestifs.

It is generally accepted that this particular expression was distilled in 1940 and was bottled at 17 years of age.
