Lot number: 153-00728

Winning bid: £10,500

Glenfiddich was founded in Dufftown by William Grant, who had honed his craft at Mortlach distillery; and on Christmas Day 1887 the first spirit ran from the stills. Thanks to Grant's tenacity and stubborn self belief, the distillery flourished during a period of turbulence in the industry, and has grown to become one of the best selling brands of single malt whisky in the world, only occasionally trading the number one spot with fellow Speyside behemoth, Glenlivet.

Still owned by the Grant family today, the pioneering distillery is responsible for a lot of "firsts" in whisky world. Perhaps most importantly, they were the first to really promote the idea of drinking whisky as a single malt as opposed to in blends. They were also the first distillery to open their doors to the public, sparking a trend that has undoubtedly benefited the Scottish tourist industry greatly.

50 Year Old:

A quite magnificent and stunning 50 year old Glenfiddich, distilled in 1939. The Glenfiddich 50 year old is regarded as one of the finest single malts and is one of the ten most expensive whiskies in the world.

Cask numbers 844, 845, 846 and 847 were filled on 17th July 1937 and casks 1044, 1046, 1047 and 1048 were filled on 25th November 1939. One cask, 1111, was filled on 14th December 1939.

They were all taken from Warehouse No 11 for vatting - No 90/3034. Having been returned to the cask for over a year to allow the whisky to marry, on the 26th July 1991, the whisky was finally bottled.

The label is signed by Alexander Grant Gordon, chairman of the company and great-grandson of William Grant.

Includes scroll authenticating the spirit and deeming the bearer to be a `Freeman of the Glenfiddich Distillery`. Whoever wins this bottle at auction will have those rights transferred.

This lot also contains a wooden presentation case and a certificate which is signed by Stuart Dickerson, Distillery Manager, Peter Duncan, Chief Distiller, G Head Cooper, D Robertson, Warehouse Manager and A M Head Maltman
