Cragganmore 1971 48 Year Old Prima & Ultima
Lot number: 160-05154
Winning bid: £3,000
A hidden gem in Diageo’s crown, Cragganmore is one of the original “Classic Malts”. While it isn’t seen as a single malt as often as some of its contemporaries - with the majority of production going to blends, such as Old Parr - its full-bodied, meaty complexity has won it a dedicated fan base.
The reason for this robust style can be traced back to the distillery’s founding in 1869 by one of the great Master Distillers of the era, John Smith. Smith installed unusually short and flat-topped spirit stills, with lyne arms that gently slope into worm tubs where the spirit vapours are condensed. This method results in fewer of the heavier elements being removed, giving the spirit its “meaty” character.
Celebrated whisky maker Diageo uses the Prima & Ultima name to showcase its very finest casks from across Scotland.
