Linkwood was established in 1821, but only started production in 1824. It was named after an old mansion house that formerly stood on the site. Founder, Peter Brown was the factor (manager) of the Linkwood Estate and wisely kept his nose clean until the 1823 Excise Act was on the stature book.
It was completely rebuilt in 1874 by his son William and existed as an independent distiller, run by an Elgin-based whisky broker, until 1932 when it joined the DCL stable. It has remained in production ever since, with regular upgrades taking place, most significantly in 1972 when a new distillery was built opposite the old buildings.
Linkwood has been operating for nearly 200 years and enjoys a very high reputation amongst blenders for its light fragrant style that is twinned with a thick texture in the mouth. This is achieved with a long fermentation of 75 hours , and slow distillation in spirit stills that are larger than the wash stills so they can maximise the contact with the copper.
This was bottled by Ian Grant & Co, a small Glasgow based blending firm that were presumably Linkwood customers, and began bottling it as ‘Ian Grant’s Liqueur Scotch Whisky’ in 1920, marketing it as “pre-war excellence maintained in every way.” The firm operated until the 1950s when it became the Old Grantian Company, and appears in several trademark dispute cases with William Grant & Sons into the 1960s. Very little mention is made of them after this.
Bottled around 100 years ago, this has to one of the oldest remaining bottles of Linkwood in existence today!
