The 168th Auction

Well, if that was summer then we’ve had it, but not to worry for here is our now live 168th auction to drive away those rainy-day blues!  As always, we have an amazing selection of drams to choose from this month with thousands of bottles from every whisky-producing region on the planet.  With so much to choose from we have picked out a few special bottlings to get your watchlist started.

First up is a superb bottling of incredible age this is the Macallan 1946 52 Year Old Select Reserve 75cl.  This whisky was distilled in 1946, but for a little context what else was going on in that year? Well, the world was still recovering from the end of WWII, Clement Attlee was the Prime Minister here in the UK, and the evergreen Dolly Parton had just been born.  A fine year indeed.  The whisky itself has been waiting patiently in a sherry cask for 52 years prior to being bottled. No fancy packaging or bling, this is one classy act.

Next up we have another elderly gentleman but this time from the land of the rising sun, this understated beauty is the Yamazaki Age Unknown 75cl.  The Yamazaki Age Unknown bottles were first released in 1989 to celebrate the life of Master blender Keizo Saji and mark his receipt of the Order of the Sacred Treasure.  A 2nd edition was released in 1994 which had Keizo’s signature on the front label, but this is the original 1989 release.  Containing whisky thought to be 30 years old this is a well-aged rarity and a must-have for serious collectors of Japanese whisky.

From the shores of Japan to the verdant coast of Aberdeenshire this is the Glenury Royal 1953 50 Year Old.  The now-silent Glenury distillery closed for the last time in 1985, and so remaining stocks of whisky are now increasingly scarce and sought-after.  And none more so than this absolute belter of a bottle released by Diageo in 2003.  This is arguably the most renowned of all Glenury Royal releases, which is no surprise given its five decades of ageing and represents a bygone era of whisky production in Scotland’s Northeast.

Let’s finish on a high, shall we?  Our final highlight is one of the oldest releases ever sourced from the stocks of a now-silent Japanese icon, this is the Karuizawa 1964 48 Year Old Wealth Solutions bottling.  An astonishingly scarce single cask this one, drawn from a single 400 litre sherry butt where it was aged for a mammoth 48 years only 143 bottles were produced with each presented in a unique dark wooden box fashioned from Polish black fossil swamp oak.  This is one of the rarest Karuizawa’s ever produced and would take pride of place in any collection.
