Lot number: 168-03104

Winning bid: £7,000

The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow ‘cut’ of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world.

A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports.

Select Reserve:

This whisky was distilled in 1946, but what else was going on in that year? Well, the world was still recovering from the end of WWII, Clement Attlee was the Prime Minister here in the UK, and 1946 was the year Dolly Parton was born. Music choices would have been Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como... Seems a little more civilised than today’s twerking we think! All of this being before the internet, computers, PPI claims and One Direction. Gosh, we’re suddenly feeling old.

But back to the whisky... It has been waiting patiently in a sherry cask for 52 years prior to being bottled. No fancy packaging or bling, this is one classy act. We would say that it’s a must have for Macallan collectors but that’s too obvious. This is a bottle for connoisseurs of whisky.
