Lot number: 168-04072

Winning bid: £30

The Château de la Raillerie is located in the Petite Champagne near Archiac. Its activities as a winery began in the 18th century. At that time the building consisted of just 5 or 6 rooms, a simple hearth and several cellars. Due to the unsafe conditions at the time, it was vital to hide the harvest. For this reason, most of the cellars were underground and connected to the church 800 m away. During the reign of Napoleon III and his successors, the vineyards expanded further east to their current location. Initially there were only simple and functional farm and residential buildings, but these were then expanded into a manor house before the phylloxera crisis in 1870. In the dark years that followed, the Laîné family, winegrowers for generations, could no longer afford the necessary repairs and building expenditure, and the buildings fell into disrepair.

Today, the estate comprises 22 hectares of vineyards and is one of the very few wineries in the Cognac region to cultivate the three white grape varieties Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Sémillon. These grape varieties and the chalky soil of Petite Champagne give the spirits their distinctive character.
