Macduff 2006 11 Year Old H.M.Y. Britannia
Lot number: 169-03057
Winning bid: £25
Located in the fishing port of the same name, on the banks of the River Deveron, next to the Moray Firth, The whisky is named after the water source, the River Deveron, whereas the distillery is known as ‘Macduff’. Independent bottlers often tend to still use the name Macduff.
The distillery was built to the east of Banff in 1963 and was expanded from 2 to 3 stills in 1966, with a fourth still then added in 1968. Now there are five stills – two wash and three spirit – all of which have upward-tilting lyne arms that have a right angled kink in them. The spirit stills also have horizontal shell and tube condensers. It could well be that the kink in the lyne arm helps create just enough reflux to contribute a balancing fruitiness. The distillery was acquired by William Lawson in 1972 and it is now owned by John Dewar and Sons.
