Lot number: 172-04774

Winning bid: £60

Built by drystone dyker Alex Fairlie, Speyside was only commissioned in 1962 and finished in 1987. It wasn’t until 1991 that the first spirit flowed from the stills - with the first single malt. A small site, it has a pair of stills which were originally installed in the Lochside distillery but were cut down to size in order to fit into their new surroundings.

Virtually unseen as a single malt – it has appeared under the name Drumguish (named after the surrounding village) launched in 1993 - and yet in a very short time it has become the third best-selling single malt in Taiwan. More recent releases include the 100% bourbon-matured Trutina and the peated barley version dubbed Fumare as well as a port cask finnished Tenne.

This black whisky from the Speyside Distillery, takes its name from Ben Macdui which is the highest peak in the Cairngorms. The mountain was called the Black Mountain by Professor Norman Collie after his solo climb to the summit in 1891.

This 20 year old special edition is dubbed ‘Thunder in the Glens’, celebrating 20 years of the annual bike rally. Thunder in the Glens is the biggest rally of its kind in Europe, with over 3000 bikers registering for the rally each year.
