Lot number: 173-01138

Winning bid: £60

Built by drystone dyker Alex Fairlie, Speyside was only commissioned in 1962 and finished in 1987. It wasn’t until 1991 that the first spirit flowed from the stills - with the first single malt. A small site, it has a pair of stills which were originally installed in the Lochside distillery but were cut down to size in order to fit into their new surroundings.

Virtually unseen as a single malt – it has appeared under the name Drumguish (named after the surrounding village) launched in 1993 - and yet in a very short time it became the third best-selling single malt in Taiwan.

In May 2025, it was announced that Speyside distillery would close it’s doors for good, as the distilleries operations will be relocated to Strathmashie by Laggan, where they will produce Highland whisky under a different name. This move is driven by the need to expand and the existing site’s location on a floodplain.
