In Louisville, Kentucky in 1870, George Garvin Brown filled and sealed a glass bottle of bourbon for the first time striving for consistency and quality in all future bottlings. He named that spirit Old Forester after Dr. William Forrester who worked as a pharmaceutical salesman: the second ‘r’ was dropped from the surname when he retired. During Prohibition, the company now known as Brown-Forman were able to legally produce alcohol for medicinal purposes. This allowed sales to stay steady during this period and helped the huge popularity boost after the act was repealed.
