Tomintoul Distillery was built in 1965 and then purchased by Whyte & Mackay in 1973. It is situated on the banks of the Spey’s main tributary, the Avon. The distillery is named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland.
Starting life as a small site with two stills, the number has since doubled. Its style also appears to have shifted on at least two occasions from the overtly fruity manifestations of its earliest guise to a more cereal-accented make in recent years.
In 2000, Tomintoul was bought over by Angus Dundee Distillers, the distillery produces mature spirit for blends as well as releasing their own single malts. The distillery also produces a peated version named “Old Ballantruan”.
