Lot number: 173-03468

Winning bid: £190

The Havana Club brand has had a tempestuous history since the Arechabala family founded a distillery in Cuba in 1878. Known as Jose Arechabala S. A., the company produced the Havana Club rum brand but in 1960 was nationalised - allegedly at gunpoint - by the Castro regime and many of the family were arrested or exiled from Cuba to the USA and Spain. While the company’s lawyer was imprisoned, the family then allowed the US trademark of ‘Havana Club’ to lapse and the Cuban government registered the mark in the US and later assigned to Pernod Ricard; however, Bacardi obtained the family’s remaining rights and have produced rum under the contentious name. The legal dispute still rages today.

Despite all this, the Havana Club rum is hugely popular around the world thanks to the local bartenders (the Cantineros) using it to develop their own style of cocktails.

This rum has been created to perfectly compliment a Cohiba cigar.
