Lot number: 173-03983

Winning bid: £55

Named after a coaching inn on Edinburgh’s Canongate, (also owned by the Mackie family since the 1650’s) White Horse can trace its history back to 1880, when James Logan Mackie founded the whisky merchants, James Logan Mackie & Co., which by 1884 held a stake in Islay distillery Lagavulin.

In 1890 James’ nephew, Peter Mackie, who had trained at Lagavulin, became a partner in the firm which then changed its name to Mackie & Co. It was “Restless Peter” that propelled the blend across the world. He would also build the mythical Malt Mill distillery and raged against Lloyd George’s ‘People’s Budget’.

The following year the company trademarked the White Horse brand and became a partner in the newly built Craigellachie distillery, eventually taking full ownership in 1919. That same year the company also purchased Greenlees & Colville Ltd, which owned the original Hazelburn distillery in Campbeltown.

When Sir Peter Mackie died in 1924, the company took the unusual step of reorganising and renaming itself after its best-known product, White Horse. In 1927 White Horse Distillers Ltd. was taken over by the Distillers Company Ltd.

This special bottling was released for the Year of the Horse.
