Teacher’s 12 Year Old Royal Highland 75cl
Lot number: 174-04714
Winning bid: £60
Working in a grocer’s shop in Glasgow, William Teacher began selling whisky and a few years later in 1856, he gained a license to open a shop specifically to sell the spirit. By 1936 Willaim had a a chain of around 20 dram shops, licensed premises where frequenters could purchase and consume fine whiskies, making Teacher the largest licence holder in Glasgow at the time.
Later, his sons took the business to new heights with Highland Cream becoming their most popular blend. In 1876 his sons moved the headquarters of the business to Glasgow’s Enoch Square, where it remained until 1991. (You can still see the building today) By 1972 Teacher’s annual sales in the UK exceed one million cases for the first time.
The heart of Teacher’s is provided by the Ardmore distillery. In 1960 it added Glendronach distillery to its portfolio, and withdrew from the retail market with the sale of the last of the Glasgow dram shops.
