Lot number: 177-00493
Winning bid: £20
First launched in 1879 by Aberdonian Blenders, Gordon Graham & Co. this powerful blend once contained whisky from all seven distilleries on Islay. The blend originally drew its name from the black German glass that the bottle was made from however by 1914, this was changed to green glass after the outbreak of the First World War.
The current incarnation of the Black Bottle blend dates from 2013, when owner Burn Stewart Distillers decided to tone down the signature Islay-influenced nature of the brand by introducing more Speyside malts into the recipe and returning to the original black glass bottle, returning Black Bottle to something much closer to its original north-eastern roots.
