Winning bid: £30

This curious blended whisky uses a sherry solera system to mature its blend. The legend goes that managing director, Donald Smith and chairman, Alastair McIntosh discovered a parcel of 1958 whisky in the dark corner of a warehouse owned by William Muir Ltd. in Leith, and created a syndicate with four of their colleagues. The whisky was then vatted, bottled and distributed among each of the six men, hence the name. 1958 whisky, shared between 6 men = Syndicate 58/6.

The original ten casks that went into the Oloroso sherry solera vats were never fully emptied, instead they were topped up with new stocks of 12 year old whisky, a system that has apparently continued ever since.
