During the excess of distilleries in Guyana in the 17th century, rum was identified by marks such as ‘ICBU’ for the Dutch-owned distillery, Uitvlught. After this period, the price of sugar began to fluctuate and with the eventual privatisation of sugar plantations and distilleries by the Government in the 1970s, all but one - the Diamond Distillery - remain working today with the various equipment and stills all moving to this solo distillery.
However, recently the production of sugar has thrived at Uitvlught. Booker, McConnell Ltd are food wholesalers who once operated the sugar industry in Guyana. Tate & Lyle and Booker signed over a management contract with GuySuCo (Guyana Sugar Corporation) who is now the country’s largest producer of sugar. One of the sugar factories owned and run by GuySuCO is Uitvlugt.
