The Glenglassaugh distillery has had a turbulent history since being founded by James Moir in 1873; opening and closing no less than 7 times in 125 years. Always popular with blenders, single malt releases were limited for most of its very irregular working life. BenRiach Distillery Company purchased the distillery in 2013, with the distillery’s focus now firmly on the single malt market.
The BenRiach Distillery Company have been spending recent years trying to overturn Glenglassaugh’s lack of presence in the malt market (not helped by the fact that no whisky produced at the distillery from 1986 to 2008) and attempt to make it as well-known as their other distilleries, BenRiach and GlenDronach.
The American spirits company, Brown Forman purchased Glenglassaugh along with the Benriach and GlenDronach distilleries from The BenRiach Distillery Company in 2016 with Rachel Barrie as master blender across all three sites.
