Lot number: 009043

Winning bid: £700

To be sold as one lot. Both bottles come in magnificent wooden casks, one carved from the staves of old BenRiach oak casks

Cape of Storms was a limited release special bottling created to celebrate the launch of BenRiach into South Africa. In days gone by whisky casks were shipped as ballast in the trading vessels that rounded the Cape from the UK. The vessels would then return years later to the UK whereupon the casks would be removed, the whisky matured and influenced by the wood, the ship, the sea, the motion and the weather.

The bottles were made available for sale only in South Africa, launched at the Whisky Live Festival in 2007 as a 12 year old and 16 year old. The 12 was actually nearer 15 and the 16 actually nearer 19, but the time left maturing in South Africa was not allowed to be included on the age statement and only the period maturing in Scotland could be specified

There were 225 bottles of the 12 and 195 bottles of the 16. The 12 year old is presented in a wooden crate with brass plaque and the 16 in a wooden box crafted in South Africa from the staves of old BenRiach oak casks

The 12 is bottle no 89 of 225, the 16, bottle 107 of 195. They are both 750ml and bottled at 48%.
