In 1936, George Ballatine & Sons was bought by Hiram Walker-Gooderham and Worts; although this made them into a big name in the industry, they had no distilleries and specifically no source of grain whisky. Therefore, Dumbarton distillery was built at the old MacMillan shipyard on the River Leven. Dumbarton was best known for producing the grain base for Ballatine's Inverleven blend. To protect the whisky stocks from any intruders, Hiram Walker employed a hundred white geese named the 'Scotch Watch'. The distillery was closed in 2002 and the remaining geese were later retired to Glasgow Green.
This Dumbarton single grain was bottled for the Alistair Walker Whisky Company in Grangemouth which was established in 2018.
