Lot number: 150-08513
Winning bid: £55
Opened on Arran in 2019 by the people behind the distillery in the north of the island, Lagg is situated at the southerly tip and focuses on a more experimental form of whisky production, particularly in terms of heavily peated spirits. Made from barley with a phenol content of 50ppm and using peat from across Scotland and sometimes further afield, the process also includes some scientific investigations to understand the impact of making even the slightest alterations. The distillery itself was designed to resemble the contours of the island as it would look from Ailsa Craig and the sedum blanket covering the roof contains a mix of plants that change colour throughout the year.
The third of three inaugural releases from Lagg Distillery on Arran – the first whiskies to be released by the distillery. This inaugural release has used bourbon-cask maturation before being finished in Ex-Rioja Red Wine to add a toasted oak and rich dark fruitiness to the whisky.
