Usquaebach, is a rather strange spelling of uisge beatha (‘water of life’) that supposedly dates back to the 16th century and Mary Queen of Scots. Rabbie Burns himself memorialised it in his ‘Tam O’Shanter’ poem: “Wi usquabae we’ll face the de’il”.
