Scapa was founded in 1885 and used to be known as the only truly ‘unpeated’ Island malt. It was damaged by fire in 1919, but rebuilt. In 1959 a Lomond still was installed which ran as intended until 1979. Production ceased in 1994 with occasional runs being done by the crew from nearby Highland Park. In 2004, however it was released as single malt and a major refurbishment of the distillery began. The majority of the distillery’s production goes into blends including Ballantine’s.
Often described as the ‘other Orkney whisky’, Scapa is one of the two last distilleries using a Lomond still. Scappa’s still has had the rectifier plates removed to produce a classic pot still style of spirit. A purifier pipe increases reflux even further, and adds its usual oiliness.
Many fans of this underrated distillery still have a soft spot for this older style 12 year old bottling. The 12 year old was replaced by a 14 year old version in 2004, and it was also replaced by a 16 year old version in 2008. Sadly, none of these bottlings are still available for sale. We estimate this was bottled circa 1990’s.
