The 185th Auction

The warmest of welcomes one and all to our now live 185th auction!  We have a plethora of fantastically well-aged whiskies in the auction this month, so much so it was hard to whittle the highlights down to just four.  Not to worry though if the drams we have included are somewhat out of your reach because we have a terrific range of whiskies available to suit every pocket and palate.  And so, without further ado here are this month’s highlights.

First up we have an absolutely fantastic release from one of Scotland’s most celebrated producers, this is the Macallan 1948 51 Year Old Select Reserve with Certificate.  This indisputably rare whisky was put in the cask in 1948 and spent an incredible fifty one years ageing before its eventual release in 1999.  Very much a ‘must-have’ for any serious Macallan collectors out there.

In keeping with our theme of very auld whiskies, our next highlight is a beauty from the Far East, this is the Karuizawa 1965 50 Year Old Single Cask #8636 for La Maison du Whisky.  As with our first highlight this tremendous dram spent five decades ageing before being released, with this one being aged in a single ex-bourbon cask.  Bottled for the highly esteemed French retailer La Maison du Whisky this release is a triumph of understated design.

From the shores of Japan to the bucolic surrounds of Speyside, this is the Glenfarclas 1953 63 Year Old Sapphire Pagoda.  An impressive release from one of Speyside’s biggest hitters, Glenfarclas, this dram is packaged in a striking Glencairn crystal decanter with a blue crystal pagoda-shaped stopper.  This is the final release of the prestigious Pagoda Series, which at its time was the oldest Glenfarclas whisky ever bottled.

Which brings us nicely to the oldest whisky we have in the auction this month, this venerable auld gentleman is the Glen Grant 1957 64 Year Old Mr George Legacy 2nd Edition Gordon & MacPhail.  The legacy edition from the Glen Grant distillery, which was laid down 64 years ago while ‘Mr George’ Urquhart was at the helm of the business, celebrates his long-term approach to maturation and the importance of matching whisky to the ideal cask wood.  A marvellous piece of material history as well as an undoubtedly delicious dram.
