Barra Distillers Blended Malt

The Isle of Barra Distillers was founded in January 2017 in Castlebay on the Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, by husband-and-wife team Michael and Katie Morrison with a vision to bring legal distillation back to their native island and combat local depopulation. The company received its full distilling licence and bonded warehouse facilities, launching its signature Isle of Barra Atlantic Gin made with hand-foraged local carrageen seaweed. The product line expanded to include Hebridean Vodka and Island Dark Rum, followed by major retail distribution deals such as Waitrose in 2023.

Construction broke ground on a new £12 million purpose-built single malt whisky distillery and visitor centre (delayed briefly by an archaeological find of ancient pottery). The new site is planned to begin full production and open to the public in 2027, eventually replacing the original Castlebay gin footprint. Isle of Barra expects to produce around 200,000 litres of pure alcohol per annum, with capacity to fill 1,600 casks each year.
