The Dunfermline Public House Society Ltd. was a fascinating, ambitious civic experiment established in 1901 in Fife, Scotland. It operated under the Gothenburg System. (often locally nicknamed “Goth” pubs) This system was adopted across central Scotland’s industrial and mining heartlands around the turn of the 20th century to counteract extreme local drunkenness.
By 1946, the Dunfermline Public House Society had grown to own and run five public houses around the Dunfermline area including venues like the Glen Tavern on Pittencrieff Street, the Old Inn, the Cottage Inn, and the Union Inn.
To maintain a respectable establishment, Goth pubs heavily regulated what was sold in their establishments. Rather than stocking low-quality spirits, the Dunfermline Public House Society commissioned their own high-quality house blends, such as the “Auld Grey Toon” blend sourced directly from the Glen Grant Distillery.
