Another victim of the 1983 cull, Glen Mhor has perhaps the best reputation of the Inverness distilleries (The Inverness Three) that survived until the 1980s. The distillery was designed by the leading architect of the time, Charles Doig, and being located between the Caledonian Canal and the railway, gave it superb communication links.

Founded by John Birnie in 1894, the distillery remained water-powered until the 1950’s and was the first distillery to use a Saladin box for their malting needs. It re-emerged most recently when it was named as one of the malts in the Mackinlay’s blend which was found entombed in ice under Ernest Shackleton’s hut.

The result of the mutual support and friendship with some of Scotland’s single malt producers means that Gordon & MacPhail has traditionally matured and bottled whisky from a collection of distilleries, releasing them with a ‘house’ label, unique to each distillery. From the Orkney distillery of Scapa, through to Speyside classics such as Strathisla, Longmorn, and Glen Grant, the ‘Distillery Labels’ series showcases individual producers with whom Gordon & MacPhail have been working with, sometimes for over a century.

We estimate this was bottled circa 1970’s.
